Summary: President Barack Obama was the 44th President of the United States of America. He served two terms in the White House from 2009-2017, passed many pieces of legislation and implemented policies that would impact Americans and citizens around the world both immediately, and for the foreseeable future. In addition to his presidency, Barack Obama is the husband of Michelle Obama, a girl-dad, and a lover of reading and basketball. In this lesson, which asks students to create a timeline of events in President Obama’s life and presidency, students will learn about Barack Obama before the White House, during his presidency, and after his two terms.

Grade(s): Secondary; 8th grade

Time: 50 minutes

Standards:

  • SS.6-8.CV.1.MC. Evaluate the powers and responsibilities of individuals, political parties, interest groups, and the media; how these have changed over time; and the impacts on multiple communities.

  • SS.6-8.H.1.MC. Evaluate the significance of historical events to multiple groups and the relationship to modern-day movements and events.

Summary: Former First Lady Michelle Obama is the wife of Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States of America. She served across two presidential terms in the White House from 2009-2017, and launched programs and initiatives that supported young people, military families and veterans, and people around the world. In addition to being a former First Lady, Mrs. Obama is an author, a mother, and a lover of art. In this lesson, students will learn about Mrs. Obama before the White House, during the Obama administration, and afterwards.
