In celebration of International Day of the Girl, the Girls Opportunity Alliance announced a new commitment to support organizations that educate and empower adolescent girls around the world.

The Girls Opportunity Alliance is supporting 54 organizations in 28 countries with a total of $2.5 million. From Indonesia to Kenya to Chile, these organizations are offering economic support, creating safe spaces, working to end child marriage, and more.

Sanam Sherpa, who leads The Small World Nepal, is one of the leaders supported through this work.

“The funding is an incredible support, and the recognition, credibility, and confidence it brings have strengthened us in profound ways,” Sherpa said. “The Girls Opportunity Alliance’s impact has reached far and wide, touching remote Himalayan villages beneath Mount Everest. Our girls are now staying in school, completing university, and daring to dream bigger than ever before. In a country like Nepal, educating one girl not only transforms her life, but also uplifts generations that follow. Our girls are ready to climb their own Mount Everest and achieve their dreams.”

A group of four women with a range of light to dark skin tones stand in a circle. All are smiling and dressed professionally.

Jackie Bomboma is a leader from Tanzania who founded the Young Strong Mothers Foundation, which is also receiving funding.

“The Girls Opportunity Alliance are like sisters and mothers for us,” Bomboma said. “This support will allow us to reach 400 girls at risk of child marriage and school-dropout. Girls who face so many barriers will be able to know they are worthy and receive support so they can be defined by their dreams, not only their obstacles. It is transformational for us to be part of this global community–to know we are not alone.”

A group of girls with a range of ages and light to dark skin tones gather in front of a building on a sunny day. The side of the building reads, “YSMF Darasa LA USHONAJI,” which translates to YSMF sewing class.

On this International Day of the Girl and beyond, we hope you will join us to support leaders and organizations like these around the world–because the future of our world is as bright as our girls.

In the center of the photo is a young girl with a dark skin tone and no hair. She is smiling as she rests her hands on top of several books. She is surrounded by a group of girls with dark skin tones reading books. Most of the girls in the background are wearing purple hijabs.
